/about our area
Treasure Beach - The Treasure Beach area consists of farming and fishing communities which are located along a section of the southwest coast of Jamaica. Tourists are welcomed here too but it is nothing like the major tourist areas on the island. Here tourism goes on around the community. If you want a glimpse of local culture, this is the place to find it. If you want a lobster dinner, you can easily order one at a local restaurant like Pardy’s or the more adventuresome can go down to the fishing beach and purchase their dinner from one of the fishermen who has just returned from checking his fish pots. These fishermen sometimes leave the beach at midnight and travel through the darkness to reach their particular fishing location by daylight. After hauling all their fish pots, they head home returning to the beach around dusk. Usually there is someone with a pickup waiting for them, hoping to buy whatever fish isn’t sold locally. This person will drive the catch up into the hills and market it in communities away from the sea.
Farming takes place
throughout the area of Treasure Beach
but is most prevalent in the area called
Pedro Plains. This serious farming area
is located in the upper table top region
just inland from the bluff that overlooks
the low lands along the beaches. As you
drive around Pedro Plains, you can see
fields of scallions, tomatoes, peppers
and melons to mention a few local crops.
Vendors buy from local farmers and then
either carry it to a town market to sell
or drive through the community selling house to house.
TRANSPORT and DINING /transportation
Most people fly into the Montego Bay Airport. We can have a taxi driver meet you, or you can hire a driver at the airport. The drive is approx. 2 1/2 hours from there to our guesthouse. Once you arrive and and have a chance to settle in, several forms of transportation become available to you. It is a very easy walk to various dining establishments as well as to our local beach etc...There are also a couple of places that rent bicycles. The roads that run through the tourist area are fairly flat and it is easy to access the whole lower area with a bike. There are also kayaks for rent. If you are interested in either of these just ask Bebe and he will help you get hooked up. Jamaica has a great taxis system that will take you just about anywhere on the island for a reasonable rate. You can easily catch a taxis from Treasure Beach to Black River although you might have to wait for a while before one comes along. Once you reach Black River there is a taxis stand there where you can get a ride to almost any town or at least to the next step on the way to your destination. Bebe and Lisa are also great resources for securing you transportation to anywhere you desire.
/dining
There are a variety of small grocery stores in Treasure Beach which carry basics. Black River (about 30 min) and Crossroads (about 15 min) are where the larger supermarkets can be found. The open air market can also be found in Black River. There is a produce stand and a produce truck in our area with fresh fruits and veggies. A number of restaurants are within easy walking distance from our guesthouse..these include local cuisine as well as pizza & ice cream etc...

ACTIVITIES /activities
The local beach at Frenchman:
The closest beach is the beach at Frenchman Cove. A quick walk from our guesthouse, just accross the main street. There are two main areas on this beach. One runs along the edge of the harbor and the other is exposed to the sea. The harbor holds a number of both boat tour and fishing boats securely in the calmer waters. Eggy's Bar is also here on the beach. You can have a cold beer, maybe some jerk chicken and a seat in the shade from which to watch the comings and goings. If you have more energy then that, it would be worth trying a little body surfing or buggie boarding in the waves on the exposed portion of the beach. Keep an eye out for undertows that can occasionally be present especially when its rough.
Boat Tours: Black river, Snorkeling, Pelican Bar etc..
Hiking
Bird Watching
Van Tours: YS Falls, Appleton Rum Factory Tour,
Black River (Open Air Market), Little Ochi etc...
Live Music
YS Falls:
This beautiful series of waterfalls is about a 90 minute drive up into the hills from Treasure Beach. There is an admittance charge which changes occasionally so ask before you go. After you pay, you will get onto a large trailer with benches. This jitney, as they call it, will then be pulled by a tractor on a nice trip through fields and woods to the falls. The trail follows the series of falls up to the top using a combination of graveled paths, boardwalks and steps. Aside from the beauty of the falls, the area is nicely landscaped and there is a bathroom and changing area in case you want to swim or try the rope swing. There is also a giftshop/snackbar area and lots of lawn where you can spread out a blanket. Life jackets are available for children and there is a calm swimming area where young children can swim away from the main river. This is a beautiful spot and the trip up and back gives you a good chance to get a look at Jamaica.
Fishing- Mahi Mahi, Jack, Banita, Marlin etc....
